Artefact 3 - Daw Track

Aim -

As this was the very first time I had used a DAW, it was definitely a struggle to begin with. Learning how to create my own synth patches certainly contributed to me finishing the project. We were tasked to create 8 synth patches throughout the project, although only 2 of the patches were used in the making of the DAW track. we were also tasked with making our own midi instrument that would later on be implemented into the final track. My team had chosen a harmonica as our instrument, this later became apparent that it wasn't really a suitable choice as it didn't really align with the theme of my track. If I was to do another project like this I would of picked a more suitable instrument to use. None the less, I am happy with what I was able to accomplish in the time frame as well as it only DAW project I had ever done. Overall I feel I have gained valuable experience that I can build on in future music production work.

Criteria i had to achieve -

  1. Contain a use of both your Sampler Instrument and 2 of your Synth Patches
  2. Be a minimum of 2 minutes long.
  3. Have a minimum of 4 MIDI tracks
  4. Have a minimum of 4 Audio tracks
  5. Make use of compression on either or both of individual tracks or the Master track.
  6. Make use of Reverb / Delay / Echo (either on tracks or as sends and returns)

Drums -

For one of my synth patches I made a kick drum. I have used a sine wave and shaped the wave using the envelope feature. This sine wave creates a deep bass sound. The volume envelope is set with no attack and a short decay so the so the sound hits instantly and fades away like a drum hit.

Synth -

When I first started the project I had no vision in mind, so I went of one of the synth patches I made, Which ends up becoming one of the main melodies of the tune I made. I used a wavetable synthesiser to create the sound and used the harmonic feature  with the multiple voices setting to create a unique sound where the voices where all in unison to sound like a concert hall, this paired with the hybrid reverb I used, this added space and depth to the piece. I also used the envelopes controls to give the sound a smoother fade. These changes on the track contributed to the overall vibe of the track.
